'Ponds' is based on my experience of observing a small pond, where I became particularly interested in the shapes and shadows created by plants overhanging the still planes of water.
Process: I begin each painting by making several drawings of these shadows, all on top of each other, directly onto the canvas. This creates a mess of lines, which evolve into shapes as I start painting, and are eventually understood through fields of color. By pulling from a variety of images and compressing them into a flat plane, I form a web of information that allows for and encourages evolutionary freedom. In the development of each piece, I experiment with the composition as I progress, adding and taking away parts of the puzzle while never knowing what the end result will be. I make decisions intuitively and consider color the most important factor in this series.
